AC Milan suffered a shock defeat to
Malaga after Joaquin made amends for
a penalty miss by sealing a 1-0 win
over the Italian giants.
Champions League debutants Malaga
spurned a golden chance when
Joaquin blazed his first-half spot-kick
over, but he rectified this mistake with
a 64th minute strike to secure victory in
the Group C clash at La Rosaleda.
The dominant hosts appeared to force
a breakthrough in the 44th minute
when Kevin Constant was harshly
adjudged to have felled Jesus Gamez
in the box, but Joaquin lashed the
penalty over the bar.
The former Spain winger refused to be
denied after the break as he raced
onto Manuel Iturra's chipped pass and
beat Marco Amelia at the near post.
Milan could have fallen further behind
as Amelia clawed away a curling effort
from Pereira dos santos Eliseu, but the
visitors came on strong in the closing
stages and Giampaolo Pazzini headed
wide.
The Serie A side desperately tried to
find a late leveller and Stephan El
Shaarawy's shot was saved by Malaga
keeper Wilfredo Caballero before
Phillipe Mexes volleyed wide.
