Zenit win keeps hopes alive

Zenit St Petersburg re-ignited their
Champions League qualification hopes
with an ugly 1-0 win over Anderlecht in
terrible conditions in western Russia.
Alexander Kerzhakov netted from the
penalty spot to give the big-spending
Russians their first win and lift them
above the Belgians into third place in
Group C.
Bram Nuytinck clumsily grappled
Alexander Anyukov round the neck
and threw him to the ground in the
area as the hosts took a quick free-kick
for the game's pivotal moment.
However, on this evidence, Zenit will
have to move up another gear if they
are to trouble the section's principals -
Malaga and Milan - after a match in
which effort trumped excellence by
soe distance.
The home side dominated for the bulk
of the match but it was Anderlecht's
Milan Jovanovic who had the best
chance to break the deadlock prior to
Kerzhakov's goal when sent clear early
in the first half.
The visitors launched a late futile flurry,
but lacked the necessary composure in
front of goal to make their pressure
tell.
