Southampton 2-2 Fulham

An injury-time header from two-goal
Jose Fonte earned Southampton a 2-2
draw with Fulham in a pulsating
encounter at St Mary's.
The Portuguese defender, who had
never scored in the Premier League
before, opened his account early on
before powering in a 92nd minute
header after a Jos Hooiveld own goal
and a late strike from Kieran
Richardson had turned the game on its
head for Fulham.
Fonte struck after just four minutes
when he rose to meet Adam Lallana's
corner and the ball flew off his
shoulder into the top corner.
The Saints could easily have added to
their total in a one-sided first half but
for once top scorer Rickie Lambert
missed the target after a perfect pull-
back from Jay Rodriguez, before Jason
Puncheon hit the post.
Martin Jol's men upped the tempo in
the second half and were twice denied
an equaliser within a matter of
seconds.
First the ball was diverted onto the
post by Lambert during a scramble in
the box and when Southampton failed
to clear their lines, Hugo Rodallega
forced a brilliant point-blank save from
Paulo Gazzaniga.
But Fulham were not to be denied,
although they were helped by a
massive slice of fortune. Jon Arne
Riise's low shot appeared to be going
wide when Hooiveld stuck out a leg to
send it past the helpless Gazzaniga.
Richardson then appeared to have
won it for the visitors after smashing
the ball past Gazzaniga via the
outstretched leg of the unfortunate
Hooiveld with two minutes left.
But Fonte had other ideas, rising
highest to power home a free-kick and
earn Southampton a precious point to
lift them out of the bottom three.
