Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese
Grand Prix to blow the world
championship wide open with five
races remaining after series leader
Fernando Alonso sp out at the start.
The Red Bull driver claimed back-to-
back wins to cut Alonso's lead to four
points from 29 after the Spaniard
clipped Kimi Raikkonen's on the first
corner at Suzuka.
Vettel was left out in front, on his own,
and raced to a luxurious triumph, the
24th of his career, a feat that drew him
level with the legendary Argentine
Juan-Manuel Fangio in the record
books.
Felipe Massa raised Ferarri's spirits by
claiming second place while Kamui
Kobayashi took a career-best third to
become the first Japanese driver to
climb the podium since Aguri Suzuki in
1990.
However, it was another poor day for
McLaren as Jenson Button and Lewis
Hamilton finished fourth and fifth,
although the latter moved to within 42
points of Alonso.
Button battled to overhaul Kobayashi
in the final laps but the Sauber driver
managed to cross the line with just
over half-a-second to spare to the
delight of the home fans.
Hamilton finished a further 20 seconds
adrift of team-mate Button while Red
Bull's Mark Webber fought up from the
back of the field after being hit from
behind at the first corner to take ninth.
Retirement-bound seven-time
champion Michael Schumacher
finished 11th, just failing to score a
point after starting from the back of
the grid for Mercedes.
